Exploring the transition to co-leadership

Craigardan (krā gärden) nurtures interdisciplinary creative practice through an international residency program, community education, and the farming and stewarding of 320 acres of mountainside fields and forests in the Adirondack State Park of New York.

Craigardan engaged Four Stones Consulting to support a process to explore a co-leadership model for their organizational leadership.

We provided a research synthesis that relayed several approaches to and case studies of shared leadership structures. We worked closely with the founding Executive Director to develop content and an approach to working with the board and committee tasked with learning more about co-leadership. We then designed and facilitated a board committee conversation on co-leadership models addressing key areas of inquiry, curiosity, concern and interest. Then, we were invited to design and facilitate a half-day board retreat to foster shared understanding and consensus around Craigardan’s strategies, leadership structure and next steps. We used human-centered design approaches, a focused conversation model, and introduced tools like fist to five.
